Welcome to National Welding Month!

Twenty-three years ago, the American Welding Society (AWS) established April as National Welding Month in order to recognize the industry and tradespeople who strive to keep the world together — one weld at a time.

Since then, American welders have not only kept products rolling off our assembly lines, they’ve also kept our economy booming.

Think of it: Every day in thousands of shipyards, assembly plants and construction sites across America, skilled welding professionals are building the structures and products we’ve come to depend on. Behind-the-scenes welders are in fact the very backbone of American industry.

Just take a look at the many ways welding has been depicted in our popular culture over the years:

As you can see, a career in welding is not for the faint of heart. But it’s a trade that every industry relies upon to keep from falling apart at the seams.

Welders as Heroes

Did you know that WWII was known as the “Resource War”? That’s because the outcome was largely determined by which countries could out-produce the others. U.S. welders were such an essential part of that effort that the following comments from President Franklin Roosevelt are forever inscribed on the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.:

“They have stoked the furnaces and hurried the factory wheels. They have made the planes and welded the tanks. Riveted the ships and rolled the shells.”

Welding is a growing industry in dire need of more skilled tradespeople. In fact, the industry is predicting a shortage of at least 450,000 skilled welders by 2022.
